The Wasamac underground mining project is subject to a provincial and federal environmental assessment. These procedures guarantee a rigorous framework that combines the knowledge of experts, citizens, and indigenous communities and organizations.
Several phases of these procedures have been completed so far (see diagram below).
The current phase consists in the participatory development of the environmental impact assessment (EIA), which will be done in cooperation with the Task Force. The firm selected to prepare the EIA is WSP. We are confident that WSP will provide solid support to our project team in the participative creation of the EIA in cooperation with citizens and indigenous communities and organizations.
WSP was selected by Monarch Gold Corporation(owner from 2017 to 2021) in December 2020 in keeping with the schedule stipulated in the environmentalassessment procedures. We could not invite citizens to help choose the firm (as suggested at the coffee meeting of February 2020) due to the public health situation and the limitations on public hearings, which included the creation of the Task Force.
Our team has started to develop a mobilization plan in collaboration with indigenous communities and organizations to determine their desired participation in the EIA process.
As the Task Force began its work, the WSP team and itsvision was presented and the role of the community in preparing the EIA explained.
