Exploration Program
The exploration program for the Wasamac deposit took place from 2021 to 2024. The purpose of this exploration work was to gain a better understanding of the deposit’s geological characteristics in order to better plan the Wasamac mining project and determine its feasibility and potential mine life.
The exploration work was carried out by RJLL, a company based in Rouyn-Noranda. RJLL holds ÉCOLOGO certification, which recognizes mining exploration companies for applying best environmental, social, and economic practices. A series of innovative mitigation measures have been developed and are being implemented by experts to minimize the impact of our activities on the acoustic environment.
Each of the drilling rigs used was equipped with:
• A dissipative silencer installed at the engine intake and exhaust.
• Acoustic covers installed directly on all walls.
For operations closer to residential areas, a removable screen was installed near the drill string.
To reduce the environmental impact, drilling mud was collected in the green zone and disposed of at an authorized site. Mud collected elsewhere was stabilized at a location at least 60 m away from water bodies and wetlands to contain the solids and prevent particles from leaching into these environments.
Once drilling was complete, the holes were cemented. The cementing procedure involves lowering the drill pipes to the bottom of the hole and pumping cement into the bottom of the pipe. The pipe is then raised as the cement flows out, ensuring that the hole is completely cemented. The impact of the cementing is confined to the drill hole and has no effect on neighboring wells.
As part of the exploration program, agreements were reached with the landowners whose properties were affected by the work. These agreements were guided by an agreement manual, developed with input from the neighborhood. Furthermore, in the event of damage, we committed to having repairs carried out at the company’s expense. Once the work was completed, an inspection was conducted by the project superintendent. In accordance with the agreements reached with the property owners, the properties were restored to their original condition.
