Following Agnico Eagle Mining's offer to acquire Yamana Gold, the process is nearing completion. According to the latest press release issued by Agnico Eagle, "The pending acquisition of the Canadian assets of Yamana Gold (Yamana Transaction) is expected to close in March 2023, subject to regulatory approvals."

Through this process, Agnico Eagle Mining will own 100% of the Canadian Malartic mine, 100% of the Wasamac underground mining project and several other properties in Canada. The company is no stranger to Abitibi-Témiscamingue where it has been operating for over 50 years.

You can consult the official press release in English on this link :

The statements in the press release regarding the Wasamac project are as follows: in 2023, Agnico Eagle plans to analyze the technical work carried out to date, to further evaluate the exploration potential and to evaluate the concept of processing Wasamac ore at the Canadian Malartic mine plant. This concept would have the potential to reduce the project's footprint on the land and the environment, and would also reduce capital costs. The technical evaluation of Wasamac should be completed by the end of 2023. The permitting schedule for the project will be reassessed in this process. As these assessments progress, we will follow up through our usual communication channels and at upcoming public meetings. At this time, there is no new field work planned and the announced bulk sampling of the deposit may be delayed.

The Community Relations office remains open as usual and the Community Relations team remains available to answer your questions, comments or concerns. You can reach us by email at wasamac@yamana.com, by phone at 1-833-510-0330 or at our community relations office at 14 rue d'Évain.

As the year begins, we are pleased to share an update on the project. One year after its acquisition by Yamana Gold, the Wasamac underground mining project continues to be optimized and the regional team is growing. Following a busy year of hiring in 2021, our team will have four new resources in January, for a total of 15 people. Two additional positions are also posted in the Careers section of our website, and we plan to continue this momentum to support project development.

In terms of community relations, the dialogue with the communities continues despite the year-end tightening of COVID-related health measures announced by the government. The official opening of our community relations office, located at 14 rue d'Évain in Rouyn-Noranda, is planned for this winter. We will extend an invitation to the public at that time and look forward to welcoming you in person when the health situation permits and when the current renovation work is complete. Until then, our team can be reached at any time by phone at 1 833 510-0330 or by email at wasamac@yamana.com.

The year starts with the posting of an explanatory video. We invite you to watch it to learn more about the various components of the project, which has reached the advanced exploration stage and the assessment of its environmental and social impacts. The consultation platform has been completely revamped: new Neighbourhood and Indigenous Communities and Organizations pages have been added to the Community Relations section, and the project description has been updated.

The video highlights our commitment to combining team member safety, operational productivity, and environmental protection through efficient operations management using innovative technologies. It provides detailed information on the planned infrastructure, the technologies to be used and the steps to be taken between now and the commissioning of the processing facility and the commercial production of gold scheduled for 2026-2027.

We expect the completion of most of the work for the submission of the Environmental Impact Assessment in the first half of the year, and the filing of the Assessment by the end of 2022.

The upcoming months give us a significant window of opportunity to broaden and enrich the contributions of area residents and Indigenous communities to the environmental impact assessment, as is called for by the new federal Impact Assessment Act, which prescribes increased participation by communities. Our team and experts will also be working on further technical, health, safety and environmental performance improvements to the project. For example: a new scenario for dewatered tailings disposal at the abandoned Aldermac mine site is being studied to validate its viability and environmental footprint. This site was brought to our attention by area residents and Indigenous communities as an interesting alternative that could minimize the impacts on the lands.

We continue the works to characterize and optimize the project with the contribution of the public, Indigenous communities, and experts towards the goal of building a modern underground mine.

We also wish to inform you that it is still possible to participate online in the citizen land use consultation process. This participatory exercise, which began at the December 1st neighbourhood meeting, is being held to gather information about the activities practiced in the vicinity of the proposed mine site. The minutes of that neighbourhood meeting are posted here.

Happy reading, and best wishes for the New Year!

Share July 19, 2021 – Feasibility study update: positive results for the development of the Wasamac underground mining project on Facebook Share July 19, 2021 – Feasibility study update: positive results for the development of the Wasamac underground mining project on Twitter Share July 19, 2021 – Feasibility study update: positive results for the development of the Wasamac underground mining project on Linkedin Email July 19, 2021 – Feasibility study update: positive results for the development of the Wasamac underground mining project link

We are pleased to present today the results of the updated feasibility study for the Wasamac underground mining project, confirming our intention to advance the project to production, conditional on obtaining government authorizations which are subject to the currently ongoing environmental assessment processes.

This decision clearly places Quebec and Abitibi-Témiscamingue at the heart of Yamana Gold’s future development and affirms our desire to consolidate our presence there by accelerating and positioning our development activities. The recent hiring of resources from Quebec in management positions and the acquisition of new mining properties in Abitibi last month also bear witness to this. This announcement further consolidates Yamana Gold's position as the second largest gold producer in Quebec and indicates major investments that will generate significant positive spinoffs for all communities. The recent launch of the Yamana corporate website in French(External link) is also an additional indication of this willingness to pursue our expansion in Abitibi-Témiscamingue and in Quebec.

The Wasamac underground mining project: a new page of history

Located between Évain and Arntfield, Wasamac is a former mining property operated in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The feasibility study which will be the subject of a presentation to investors tomorrow indicates that its planned operation, which would be deploying new technologies and would be focusing on respect and cohabitation with the neighborhood, would currently result in a mine life of 10 years with a development potential of more than 15 years and an annual production rate of 200,000 ounces of gold.

A favorable decision for the development of the project which reflects Yamana's commitment to put the necessary means and efforts to develop the Wasamac project in a responsible manner

This is an important milestone in the development of our project which will allow substantial investments and mark a new phase both regarding the activities of characterization of the deposit and the design of the underground mining project, and in terms of relations with the neighborhood and communities. We are enthusiastic to continue the collaborative efforts started since the first hour with the neighborhood, the communities, and the First Nations. Inspired by Yamana's values and local and international best practices, these approaches aim to determine the conditions of acceptability of the project under development and the implementation of transparent and proactive community relations.

A "yes" conditional on obtaining environmental authorizations

Provincial and federal impact assessment and environmental assessment processes are ongoing. The authorizations resulting from these processes are required to begin construction of the Wasamac underground mining project. We are confident in our ability to secure the necessary authorizations since we approach these studies with rigor and work with the best experts, both professionals and the neighborhood, to develop a project with the lowest environmental footprint possible.

Today's announcement also recommends continuing our exploration activities into a new phase of advanced exploration. This is a hypothesis that we are currently evaluating. If we were to go ahead with this one, the exploration ramp portal would be located on the west side of the Route 117 on the Wasamac property and bulk sampling of the deposit would be done via underground ways. This would also involve obtaining additional government authorizations separate from the ongoing environmental impact assessment on the mining project. The construction of infrastructure (exploration ramp) and bulk sampling would be subject to separate government authorization processes (from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources for sampling and the Ministry of the Environment for the construction of infrastructure and dewatering).

In addition, exploration activities should begin in the fall on the recently acquired Francoeur-Arntfield-Lac-Fortune properties to better define mineral resources and potential synergies with the Wasamac underground mining project.

Yamana Gold announces the acquisition of the Francoeur, Arntfield and Lac Fortune mining properties near the company’s Wasamac underground mining project. Potential synergies between the properties could bring additional value to the project under development.

Historical data from these new properties and the Wasamac project will be consolidated and exploration activities are expected to start by this fall to better determine mineral resources and synergistic potential, which could extend the life of the Wasamac underground mining project or enhance production.

There may also be synergistic interests with the Wasamac underground mining project currently under development, notably through the reuse of old infrastructure from the acquired properties.

It is important to note that despite this opportunity, the Wasamac underground mining project remains a separate entity. Wasamac is not dependent on the newly acquired properties, even if potential synergies are anticipated.

A thorough review of the 2018 feasibility study allowed Yamana to identify opportunities to optimize the Wasamac project:

    2018 feasibility
    Optimization under study
    Average tonnage
    6,053 tons/day
    7,000 tons/day
    Mine life

As previously reported, details of the final feasibility study update are expected to be available by the end of the summer.

The neighborhood meeting scheduled for this Wednesday will be an opportunity to share this news with the community and answer any questions that may arise, or at least document them if the answers are not yet available.
