Until recently, the Wasamac mining project was subject to provincial and federal environmental assessment procedures.

Since its acquisition by Agnico Eagle in March 2023, the Wasamac mining Project has been undergoing a technical review. New scenarios are being studied to process the ore at an existing plant in the region, the Canadian Malartic mine, and to improve the project's environmental performance. Agnico Eagle will not be able to complete the impact study begun by the previous proponents within the timeframe set by the federal government. As a result, the federal impact assessment process ended on December 3rd, 2024. For more details, see the related news.

The Quebec environmental assessment process remains a requirement for the Wasamac mining project, regardless of the scenario chosen. A review of the project by the Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE) will be requested.

Next steps

Project development continues. Teams from Agnico Eagle are actively working on a technical review of the project and updating its economic analysis. Permit applications for bulk sampling of the Wasamac deposit are also ongoing.

The firm that will carry out the studies and prepare the provincial impact study has not changed.

Participatory preparation of the environmental impact study

The impact study is conducted in collaboration with stakeholders, notably through the Task Force and regular neighbourhood meetings. The development of the engagement plan with indigenous communities and organizations to define the participation they wish to have in the EIA will be reviewed in collaboration with them.
