Summary of the Task Force meeting on May 27, 2025
The purpose of this 25th Task Force meeting was to provide an update on the development of the Wasamac mining project, review the work and community implications, follow up on the implementation of the Voluntary Acquisition Program, and follow up on reports.
The departure of a long-standing member of the Task Force was noted. The usual roundtable discussion was held, allowing Task Force members to meet some of the Wasamac mining project team members, including Steven Campbell, Director of Engineering and Construction, and Patrice Richer, Superintendent of Environment and Permits.
Mr. Marc-André Lavergne presented an update on the project's development, beginning with an overview of the key milestones in the history of the Wasamac mining project. He then explained Agnico Eagle's vision, its performance, and the vision for the Canadian Malartic complex.
Mr. Lavergne presented the project optimization objectives that are being pursued through the ongoing technical review. To date, the option selected represents a smaller mining operation and transport of ore by truck to a regional plant. The differences between the project presented in 2021 and the one planned today were discussed. Mr. Lavergne also explained the projected timeline for the permitting process.
Mr. Campbell then presented the infrastructure planned for the site and provided an overview of the work to be done outside the site. Mr. Richer outlined the next steps in the technical review. The team is finalizing the preliminary engineering, and certain more specific aspects of the project remain to be defined (tonnage, transportation, type of trucks, etc.). Consultations on the project will resume, and the concerns gathered to date will be revalidated and rigorously addressed in the environmental impact study.
Ms. Carole Dubois then presented the latest drilling work carried out by Agnico Eagle's Exploration Québec department in the sector known as 180. This work began in the fall of 2024 and was completed in March 2025.
Mr. Campbell continued with the work planned for the summer. This will include geotechnical drilling in the Aldermac road and Routes 101 and 117 areas, as well as maintenance work on residential properties acquired under the Voluntary Acquisition Program.
Several community activities have taken place in recent months. A meeting was held with the Évain recreation committee to collaborate on various events in their annual calendar. In addition, a summer program of activities for Lac-Hélène Park was developed in collaboration with members of the Task Force.
Ms. Vallières then presented a follow-up on acquisitions made under the Voluntary Acquisition Program. As of the date of the meeting, 13 of 39 eligible properties had been acquired and two purchase agreements were underway. Mr. St-Pierre joined the team to assist with taking possession of the properties and coordinating maintenance and follow-ups.
One report has been made since the last meeting due to forgotten equipment. A team member has already been assigned to retrieve it.
The next meeting will take place in the fall. A Doodle poll will be sent out to determine the best time for a site visit.
