Summary of the Wasamac Task Force Meeting on November 6, 2024
This 24th meeting of the Task Force aimed to provide an update on the project and changes to the team, a look back at the inauguration of Parc Lac-Hélène, present the Voluntary Acquisition Program and follow up on reports.
The meeting began with the usual tour de table. Chantal Vallières introduced Carole Dubois, who joined the team as Communications and Community Relations Advisor.
The end of the federal impact assessment process for the Project was explained by Mr. Patrice Richer. He indicated that the provincial impact assessment process was continuing, and that regardless of the scenario chosen, a review of the project before the Bureau d'audiences publiques sur l'environnement (BAPE) would be held. Ms. Vallières outlined the various stages of communication planned to notify stakeholders of this change.
The technical review of the project is still underway. A summary update of the schedule was presented. For 2025, efforts will focus on understanding the deposit, continuing the various studies in progress, and resuming the provincial environmental assessment process for the revised project. Permits for bulk sampling should be received by mid-year.
Ms. Vallières went on to report on the progress of the exploration program, including drilling in a new area nearby by the Exploration Québec team. Preparatory work is underway for the new area near Rang des Cavaliers.
An update on community relations was given, including a look back at the May 22 neighbourhood meeting, the inauguration of Parc Lac-Hélène, the completion of community gardens in collaboration with the Petite Étincelle preschool students, and Halloween at the community relations office.
Ms. Vallières then presented Agnico Eagle's Action Plan for Reconciliation with Aboriginal Peoples and the team's presence at various activities with Aboriginal communities and organizations this fall.
A reminder of the terms of the Voluntary Acquisition Program and a follow-up on its implementation were also presented. Mr. Lavergne went on to explain that a cohabitation program in the form of a Good Neighbourly Relations Guide would be the next element to work on with the Task Force.
The next meeting will take place at a date to be defined, depending on the information to be shared. The Task Force's annual review will be conducted by telephone this year. More information will be e-mailed to Task Force members in the coming weeks.
